AMBULANCE - BBC ONE

I directed and produced the BAFTA award-winning series Ambulance in 2022 and 2023. It was a pleasure working alongside a dedicated and compassionate team, as well as the ambulance crews of the North East and North West.

Hurtling down the streets in the back of an ambulance is a juggling act between adrenaline and nausea. I has to remain open to the fact that I might be filming with people on the worst day of their lives. In these situations, I was running a multi-cam rig, producing and managing ambulance crews, while also gaining access and self-shooting on prime lenses to capture coverage in life-and-death situations. As special thank you to the team at Dragonfly for the opportunity and learning.

I filmed with some incredible people during my time on Ambulance, notably Jess and Abi, who featured in Series 11: Episode 6, which I directed and edit produced with the talented editor Ruari Muir. A day before Jess and I filmed together, her mum was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Despite this, she showed up ready to film and care for the people we met in the North West. This episode also covered the pay deal, which showed the ambulance workers accepting the offer on the 14th of April. In a time when the value of paramedics and NHS workers was up for debate, Jess was doing her job to financially support her mum. You can see their compassion and warmth on full display here.

Ambulance taught me many things, from shooting sequences in the back of a helicopter at a thousand feet to negotiating access with the family of a loved one who has sadly died. But perhaps most importantly, it taught me that despite challenging times, people want to be heard, and I'm proud to have been there to listen.
